Durag Series

The du-rag is a garment used on the head that was first worn by black women, in the early 19th century. A headwear originally conceived to wrap and protect Black’s natural hairstyle while working under the sun. Later through Hip Hop, it gained more popularity in the culture. It was known to be an important part of the formula for black men to achieve the best waves. Aside from its utility, the durag has evolved throughout the history from a work utility to a fashion piece and statement.

Durag series is a photo-based project that documents the use of na historical head piece. The work was mainly shot on 35mm film around Montreal, New York and Ottawa.

Le durag est un morceau de tissu utilisé sur la tête qui était porté par les femmes noires, au début du 19ème siècle. Ce couvre-tête était originairement conçu pour envelopper et conserver leur cheveux coiffés pendant qu’elles travaillaient sous le soleil. Ce n’est que plus tard, à travers le hip-hop, que le wave cap prend sa popularité à travers la culture. Celui-ci était aussi reconnu pour être l’un des éléments essentiels dans la formule pour obtenir les meilleurs waves. Appart de son utilité, le durag à évoluer au cours de l’histoire; d’une utilité de travail à un accessoire de mode et soulignement historique.
